Authorities speak out in favor of equitable access to information on health

After 10 days of conferences, meetings and courses centered around the equitable access to information on health, the ICML9/ CRICS7 ended on Friday, September 23 2005, in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. In the closing session, the Declarations of Salvador were approved by consensus. These declarations call for a commitment to equity and to the Open Access to scientific information movement, reaffirming the importance of the VHL, SciELO and ScienTI networks

Conferences focus on the state of the art in scientific knowledge and information

Free access to information and knowledge in line with the Commitment to Equity was the main topic of the ICML9. The quality and scope of the scientific program were highlighted during the opening ceremony by the Director of BIREME and General Coordinator of the Congress, Abel Packer, by PAHO's Director, Mirta Roses Periago, and by the Secretary of Science, Technology and Strategic Input of the Ministry of Health, Moisés Goldbaum, representing the Minister of Health, Saraiva Felipe, by the Secretary of Health of the State of Bahia, José Antonio Rodrigues Alves, representing the Governor of the State of Bahia, Paulo Souto, and by the Municipal Secretary of Health, Luis Eugênio de Souza, representing the Mayor of Salvador, João Henrique de Barradas Carneiro

The VHL consolidates its role as a public reference space for technical and scientific information on health

The 4th Regional Coordination Meeting of the Virtual Health Library (VHL4) was held before the ICML9/CRICS7 and gathered approximately 500 participants from more than 40 countries in the Xangô Auditorium at the Convention Center of Bahia, in Salvador, Brazil, on September 19 and 20 2005. The proposals of the 14 Working Groups stress the VHL's role as a reference for information on health. The Declaration of Salvador - "Commitment to Equity", presented and approved by acclamation in the closing session, was another important outcome of the meeting
