BIREME celebrates 39 years providing information and knowledge on health

On March 3, 1967, BIREME/PAHO/WHO was established in Brazil by the first Maintenance Agreement signed between the PAHO, the regional office of the WHO in the Americas, and institutions representing the Brazilian Government - MS, MEC, SES-SP and UNIFESP. For 39 years BIREME has played a role in equitable access to information and knowledge on health, which is publicly acknowledged by its supporters in LA & C and by several other countries in addition to the Americas. The WHO recognizes the VHL as a source of information and knowledge on health

The WHO (World Health Organization) deems as essential efforts to minimize the knowledge gap in the field of health, and fosters the development of environments and contexts that promote the creation, dissemination, access, and effective application of knowledge available on people's health. BIREME announces a new methodology to record competences of its collaborators

On February 17, 2006, Abel Packer, Director of BIREME/PAHO/WHO announced a new methodology to register the collaborators of the institution. The initiative was developed by the Graphic Design and Interface Unit, of the Administrative Management Office (DGI/GA), and it is aligned with the methodology of Learning and Informed Environments, in the context of the Virtual Health Library (VHL). The organization may access information and the detailed profile of its collaborators who will be in charge of keeping their records updated

WAME Board of Directors for 2006/07 has two members actively collaborating on the VHL and SciELO Networks

The WAME (World Association of Medical Editors), an international association of scientific editors in the field of health has a new board for 2006/07. Two of its director , Herbert Stegemann, president, and Hooman Momen, have actively collaborated on the development of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and SciELO Networks, and have participated in scientific editor meetings organized by the BIREME/PAHO/WHO. Both gave lecturers in the meeting of Scientific Journal Editors of LILACS and SciELO, during the 4th Regional Coordination Meeting of the VHL (VHL4), in Salvador, Bahia, in September 2005.

Pioneer study on cell therapy is published in a SciELO journal

The journal Arquivos Brasileiros de Cardiologia (ABC), indexed in the SciELO, published, in January 2006, the first report of Intra-arterial de Células Mononucleares da Medula Óssea (CMMO) in the acute phase of Ischemic Stroke (AVC). The study was revealed original when compare to the few that they were already carried out in the world. ABC is part of the SciELO collection since 2000 and currently has 134 published fascicles

BIREME discusses cooperation with Java developers' community

In May 2005, Bireme's Director Abel Packer, together with the Information Methodologies and Technologies Area (MTI) at BIREME/PAHO/WHO, defined that Java will be the standard programming language the for organization developments. Java is a non-proprietary, Open Source technology. This initiative will certainly make things easier and save on costs, in terms of sharing and developing programs for Latin America and the Caribbean, considering the mission of BIREME.
In order to strengthen the institution relationship with technology users and developers, Rogério Costa and Milton Lapido, manager coordinator of MTI, joined forces with Bruno Souza, director of SOUJava (Sociedade de Usuários Java do Brasil), considered by Java the largest community of Java developers in the world.
