The United Nations Organization (UN) established June 5th as the World Environment Day, and declared 2006 the International Year of Deserts and Desertification, as this is one of the worst forms of destruction of the environment, and poses a great threat to health and to the means of subsistence of people, if we think of its impact on agricultural production. As part of the efforts geared worldwide towards the preservation of the environment, BIREME/PAHO/WHO cooperated initiative stands out. The 1st Meeting of 2006 of the National Advisory Committee of the Maintenance Agreement of BIREME/PAHO/WHO was held in São Paulo, in the campus of UNIFESP. These meetings are held twice a year at the end of each semester and have the objective of advising the Direction of BIREME in the center maintenance for the development of its national program for technical cooperation, based on the promotion of equitable access to scientific and technical information though the VHL and its related networks, SciELO and ScienTI. Yolanda Ruan de la Carrera, independent consultant on information systems, received The Ruben Perez Ortiz National Library Science Award, Ascolbi, on June 1st 2006, during the 8° Congreso Nacional de Bibliotecología y Ciencias de la Información, held in Cartagena, Colombia. The Award is granted in recognition of the performance of information professionals who dedicate their career to the enhancement of quality in education and culture. Yolanda, who was responsible for the Documentation Center at PAHO/WHO Representative in Colômbia, is an active collaborator of VHL Network, and has recently worked in the implementation of the Virtual Library for Surveillance in Public Health of Colombia, led by the Ministry of Social Protection of Colombia

The Portal of Periodicals of CAPES has enlarged its collection with the addition of seven new bibliographic databases and 734 journals with full texts. In the area of health, the CINAHL database stands out, with 2,737 journals in the area of nursing, in addition to the ISTA database, with more than 450 journals in the area of information sciences. The portal provides education and research institutions with access to an important collection of more than 10,377 international and national publications and more than 90 databases of abstracts and full texts encompassing all areas of knowledge. The Ministry of Science and Culture, a signatory of BIREME's Maintenance Agreement, funds, through CAPES, a complementary collection of health sciences journals which are unavailable from the portal for BC of UNIFESP.
