VHL Belize advances with public launching

With public launching that took place on July 4, 2006, at the Belize City, the VHL Belize received a considerable political and operational support. The ceremony was chaired by the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Margaret Ventura. Trevelee Williams, representing the National Library, Henry Anderson, the provost of the University of Belize, Kathleen Israel, Representative of PAHO in Belize and Abel L. Packer, Director of BIREME/PAHO/WHO also attended the meeting. Authorities from national public health, agriculture, trade, education and information agencies, international technical cooperation agencies and the national press participated in the launching. The VHL Belize, with open access to national, regional and international SIs, will operate regularly up to the end of 2006

SciELO innovates and allows publication of ahead of print articles

As of July 2006, the SciELO Network will offer editors the possibility of publishing ahead of print articles, initially on a pilot scale. This is one more advance that follows the current trends of online journals to speed up communication of scientific research results. Advanced publishing of articles, as planned in the original project of SciELO, became possible with the cooperation of the Revista RBP, which considers this resource a strategic innovation to improve the journal, and also to maintain and increase its capacity of attracting good quality articles. Another VHL Station is opened in Vitoria, state of Espirito Santo

On July 4, 2006, at the auditorium of the CRM, approximately 70 people attended the launching session of the VHL Station in Vitoria (ES). With the opening of this initiative headed by the Ministry of Health, State Secretariats of Health and BIREME/PAHO/WHO, the VHL Station network totals 16 stations throughout the country. The Secretary of Health, Anselmo Tose, the Secretary of Science and Technology, Guilherme Henrique Pereira, and the Director-President of the (Instituto Estadual de Saúde Pública, Nélio A. dos Santos, and representatives of institutions that lead the initiative, among other authorities, attended the launching. The VHLC Station aims to expand the access to SIs and knowledge of the VHL and to promote digital inclusion of health communities with restricted access to the Internet

BVS Nursing is formalized in the 1st meeting of the Advisory Committee

The VHL Nursing Brazil develops as a space to manage sources and flows of scientific and technical information about nursing, to consolidate the networks of producers, intermediaries and users of the research and teaching community. In the end of May, in Belo Horizonte (MG), the 1st Meeting of the Advisory Committee of the VHL Nursing in 2006 was held. It was coordinated by Francisco Lana, Director, and Maria Piedade Ribeiro Leite, consultatnt, both of the Nursing School of the UFMG, institution responsible for the Executive Secretariat of VHL Nursing. The main objectives of the meeting were to officially convene its Advisory Committee, to present the status of development of the VHL Network and of the referential bibliographic database of scientific literature in nursing (BDENF), as well as the actions to develop SIs of the VHL Nursing

Knowledge, information and access addressed at the 2nd INTEGRAR

The FEBAB and partner institutions promoted the 2nd INTEGRAR, in Sao Paulo, on June 25-29, 2006. It provided the participants a differentiated space for professionals to present their experiences and practices, thus promoting the dissemination of technical and scientific production and professional updating. Márcia Rosetto, president of the FEBAB, was responsible for the general coordination of the congress. The program included the main conference by João Steiner, Director of the IEA (USP). BIREME/PAHO/WHO was represented by Abel L. Packer, Director, Elenice de Castro, event coordinator (EVE/GA) and Francisco Lopes, system analyst (OFI/AFI)

The community Python, Zope and Plone grows in Brazil

Today Plone is one of the most popular solutions to manage contents and is under assessment by the BIREME/PAHO/WHO and INFOMED de Cuba to integrate the technologies for decentralized operation of the VHL SIs. PyCon Brazil was held in Brasilia, in the beginning of June 2006. It is a meeting of developers of the Python, Zope and Plone community, which showed an expressive growth in Brazil. The increasingly greater use of Plone is mainly due to flexibility, easiness of use and simple installation.
