Breastfeeding: support, information and awareness

Designed to strengthen social mobilization for breastfeeding, WABA continues the global strategy to promote breastfeeding - the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW). In 2006, it will be celebrated on August, 1st -7, in more than 120 countries all over the world. Founder of the Cochrane Collaboration stands out in British exhibition

The exhibition "A Picture of Health: Portraits by Julia Fullerton-Batten", currently on at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England, is the second exposition in a series about relevant public fields sponsored by Deloitte. It displays 16 professionals whose work was nationally and internationally acknowledged in the health sector in the 21st century. Iain Chalmers, founder of the Cochrane Collaboration and current editor of the James Lind Library, is one of the 16 depicted. The Chalmers´ portrait shows 150 photographs of Cochrane collaborators all over the world, acknowledging the work of other professionals and the value of team work. One of these 150 photographs depicts Álvaro Atallah, Director of the Brazilian Cochrane Center. The exhibition runs from June 6 to September 10, 2006

SciELO Venezuela Collection publishes four more titles

SciELO Venezuela is a regional initiative and its development is coordinated by the Sistema Nacional de Documentación e Información Biomédica (SINADIB), Ministry of Science and Technology (MCT), Fondo Nacional de Tecnología e Innovación (FONACIT) and by the Centro Nacional de Tecnología de Información (CNTI), with the support of the Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Central de Venezuela and of BIREME/PAHO/WHO. This integrated effort is essential to continuously increase the visibility, accessibility, quality, use and impact of Venezuelan sources of scientific and technical information. The collection currently has 22 titles and nearly 350 issues published online, in open access, including high quality journals

Study compares article citations in Google Scholar, SCOPUS and WoS

A study recently published in open access by the Biomedical Digital Libraries, by N. Bakkalbasi, K. Bauer, J. Glover and L. Wang, analyzed citations and compared the databases Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science (WoS). Two areas were addressed - Oncology and Condensed Matter Physics - and the number of citations per articles of these fields was compared. The three databases provided single data (non-coinciding) per field and during two years of publication (1993 and 2003). Understandably WoS provided the largest number of citations

VHL and SciELO will have User and Profile Management Systems

BIREME/PAHO/WHO, in a coordinated effort with SummaTech, is developing the User Management System (SGU) and the Profile Management System (SGP), which will interoperate with the SciELO and the VHL. The systems are characterized by developing an interface for maintenance and sharing of groups of data as well as authentication and maintenance of user records using Web Services. Library of Instituto Evandro Chagas develops portal at the VHL

The Library of the Instituto Evandro Chagas is specialized in publications about parasitary and infectious diseases, medical entomology, laboratory animals, human ecology and environment. Its collection provides over 50 thousand publications, based on collection of 9 thousand electronic journals and 100 printed journals, a collection of monographs composed of theses and dissertations, books and leaflets published. With the support of BIREME/PAHO/WHO to use and adjust methodologies and technologies of information and knowledge management, the institute develops the portal of its library - the VHL Instituto Evandro Chagas
