As from August 21st, 2006, BIREME/PAHO/WHO starts operating regularly the new VHL Regional Portal. Featuring interface in three languages and many innovations, the new portal makes it easier for user to navigate and retrieve information in the VHL set of sources of information. Furthermore, by adopting new technological resources for bibliographic search, the new portal represents an advance in the VHL methodology. Searches that present the results ordered by relevance of health science concepts organized in the DeCS and based on Collexis technology, search through Google Scholar, health-related news from the region and on the VHL, SciELO and ScienTI Networks are available for users in addition to the best national, regional and international scientific literature: LILACS, SciELO, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, PAHO and WHO publications and specialized sources

With the slogan "Collective Health in the Globalized World: Breaking Social Barriers, Economic and Political", more than 12 thousand participants are awaited for the 11th World Health Congress Public and 8th Brazilian Congress of Collective Health. Among the main themes of the congress is the development of the capacity of access and publication of scientific information and evidences of the scientific research as essential factor for the development of the health, which will have representatives of VHL, SciELO and ScienTI networks. With highlight to the specialized areas, the forum of public health editors, the workshop oriented to the insertion of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in the international platform of registry of clinical trials and the space health and letters. BIREME/PAHO/WHO will launch the new VHL Regional Portal and will have stand of dissemination in the international fair targeting the public health related initiatives

The landmark of the 5th Coordination Meeting of the ScienTI Network, held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, on July 26 to 28, 2006, was the approval of the cooperation agreement for full and associated members to participate in the Network, which will enable many international and national organizations to join in. The meeting gathered - locally and remotely - 38 representatives of the institutions that constitute the ScienTI and it represented the most expressive number of participants in all coordination meetings. The participants also approved a set of recommendations to advance the interoperability of the ScienTI Network sources of information

The journal Revista de Saúde Pública (RSP), indexed at LILACS, SciELO, MEDLINE and at the JCR of Thompsom Scientific, celebrates its 40th anniversary. The RSP was created in 1967 by the Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade Federal de São Paulo - FSP/USP, following the FSP/USP program to report scientific knowledge on public health. It started by publishing the Boletim do Instituto de Higiene and Arquivos da Faculdade de Higiene e Saúde Pública. The creation of the RSP represents an evolution since its very beginning, for being a journal assessed by specialists in the field, in the same way as international journals, and for especially publishing research papers, submitted by authors from different regions of the country and from abroad. The RSP has consolidated asone of the most important journals in the field of Public Health in Brazil

The Portal of Theses and Dissertations is one of the pioneer sources of information on public health, and has been available at VHL PH Brazil for almost one year. This portal provides free access to full texts of dissertations and theses in the field of public health, offering services such as reporting of vivas, news and indicators. This is a joined effort of the Centro de Informação Científica e Tecnológica - CICT of FIOCRUZ and BIREME/PAHO/WHO. The portal is also supported by the Ministry of Health, coordinated by the Library of the Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública Sérgio Arouca (ENSP-FIOCRUZ), and counts with the cooperation of the Libraries of the Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo - FSP/USP and the Instituto de Medicina Social da Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro - UERJ

A meeting to conclude the project between the Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) and BIREME/PAHO/WHO was held on August 11th, 2006. The meeting was also attended by Antonio Fernando de Franceschi, executive superintendent, Bernardo Ajzenberg and Edson M. S. Santos, executive coordinators, and the technical teams of the IMS, and Renate Landshoff and Sérgio Storch, representing Content Digital. BIREME was represented by Abel Packer, Director, and Renato Murasaki, the project's coordinator. The IMS Sources of Information Portal, based on the VHL model, was created based on the institute desire to unify its bibliographic, musical and photographic archives and collections, making them available in a user-friendly and efficient search and retrieval interface
