LILACS VHL Course for Central America is held in Honduras

With the cooperation of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras and PAHO Representative Office in Honduras, BIREME/PAHO/WHO organized two capacity-building courses on bibliographic control and indexing of scientific and technical literature on health, within the context of the VHL, in Tegucigalpa, from August 21st to September 1st, 2006. The courses were based on LILACS methodology and on LILDBI-Web application. The national and international courses were attended by participants from institutions that cooperate with the VHL Network in Honduras and from more five countries. Ministry of Health of Argentina receives training on TCLegis

On August 22-26, 2006, Adriana Luccisano, librarian of the SciELO Unit at BIREME/PAHO/WHO, gave a training course at PAHO Representative Office in Argentina, on TCLegis, an application of the VHL methodology for online publishing of legislation in full text. The course was given to a technical team of the Ministry of Health, and aimed to build up the management system of scientific and technical information and knowledge. It is part of the PAHO technical cooperation through its Representative Office and supported by BIREME, to strengthen the VHL, SciELO and ScienTI networks in the country. UNIFESP reinforces commitment to the technical cooperation of BIREME

On August 30, 2006, Ulysses Fagundes Neto, Rector of UNIFESP, promoted a meeting at the Rector's Office. BIREME participated and presented the current status of products and services it provides to the health community through the VHL. A key issue was the journal collection of the University, which is managed by the BIREME and supported by funds provided by the MEC through the CAPES. The collection is composed of 3500 journal titles and complemented with more than 2600 health journals available at the CAPES Journal Portal. The UNIFESP renewed its commitment to PAHO and other signatories of BIREME's agreement to promote broad access to scientific and technical information on health

SciELO was presented in the 1st International Symposium on Open Access promoted by IBICT

The 1st International Symposium on Open Access to Information was held in Brasilia, Federal District, on August 24, 2006. The specialists discussed the global scenario of the movement for open access to information, as well as the Open Archives model that is the basis of the SciELO methodology. BIREME/PAHO/WHO participated in the panel on Open Access for Institutional Repositories, together with the Director of IBICT, Dr. Hélio Kuramoto; Eloy Rodrigues, responsible for the Open Archives initiative at the Universidade do Minho, in Portugal; Ed Fox, Director of the initiative NDLTD, of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), USA; Rogério da Costa, MTI Manager at BIREME; and Cynthia Radding, coordinator of the Latin American and Iberian Institute of the University of New Mexico, USA. Professionals from Colombia and Peru participate in training on the VHL

Robert Loaiza, from Colombia, from the PAHO Representative Office and José Villanueva from Peru, representing the Sustainable Development and Environmental Health Area of the PAHO, visited BIREME on August 22-25, 2006. Both work with information technology and participated in several activities, particularly a training course on procedures related to installation, maintenance and customization of VHL products and sources of information. This activity at BIREME is part of the technical cooperation actions to constantly develop the VHL model

LIS: a referential source of information of the VHL

One of the referential sources of information available at the VHL, the Health Information Locator (LIS), gives access to a catalogue of sites available on the Internet and selected according to quality criteria. The LIS describes the content of these sources and provides links to them. Its main objective is to assure that classified resources related to information on health be a reference by means of metadata and have easy access. Currently, the LIS portal of the Regional VHL provides 7559 records or sources of information. The LIS access statisticsindicate a constant and systematic growth in the past three years, and presented, in the 1st semester of 2006, a monthly average of accesses (single visits) that exceeded 11,000, and if compared with the same period in past years, it is the greatest registered since its implementation in 2002
