A project proposal, based on the VHL model, to develop a network of sources of information to support public health, education and science and technology in Bolivia, formulated by PAHO, through its Representative and BIREME/PAHO/WHO, was approved in a meeting held on September 20, 2006. Representatives of the Ministry of Health and Sports, Ministry of Education, the Vice-Minister of Science and Technology and the Vice-Minister of Traditional Medicine and Inter Cultural Issues attended the meeting. The project was presented to the Swedish International Development Agency, and includes strengthening the VHL, which is under consolidation in Bolivia, and implementing the SciELO and ScienTI networks. “Virtual Health Library: information skills: resources, methodology and techniques of scientific papers”, was the theme of a course dedicated to contemporary topics on management of information and scientific knowledge on health, held at the Medical School of the Universidad de Salamanca, from September 18 to 23, 2006. Focused on students and professionals of this field, the course was attended by lecturers from the Universities of Salamanca, Granada and Valencia, professionals from the Instituto de Saúde Carlos III, IDICT and INFOMED of Cuba, and from BIREME/PAHO/WHO, besides some representatives of companies presenting their products and services

Translation or transformation of knowledge generated by scientific research into health practices, policies and processes is one of the major challenges for public health development all over the world. The August issue of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, published in open access at the SciELO Public Health is dedicated to this challenge. On August 17, 2006, the 9th group, with 110 participants, concluded the Distance Course on Bibliographic Search at the VHL. Since its launching in 2004, approximately 1000 students from practically all Brazilian States, and even from other countries, have already been trained. The distance course focused on the thematic area of Public Health is under final development. The initiative is part of the technical cooperation of BIREME to promote equitable access to scientific and technical information, by means of the VHL, SciELO and ScienTI Networks. The distance course at the VHL was translated and adapted to Spanish and will be available to Latin American countries in this semester

On September 26, 2006, students, teachers and health professionals from the city of Mococa, State of Sao Paulo, visited BIREME/PAHO/WHO. The group from the Escola Estadual Zenaide Pereto Ribeiro Rocha intended to learn about innovative experiences in the field of information on health of young people and adolescents. The VHL Adolec was presented giving special emphasis to the Adolescent Room, which provides texts written in a suitable language and frequently asked questions on themes of interest for this public. This initiative is aligned with the need of participation of the young and adolescent in actions to develop this VHL. As part of the technical cooperation project of the PAHO Representative with the Health Surveillance Center (CVS) of the Secretariat of Health of the State of Sao Paulo (SES SP), BIREME contributed in the past year to developing a set of information technology systems and solutions, comprising management of administrative and thematic processes and information systems in health surveillance.
