South Africa adopts the SciELO model for its journals

The South African scientific production started to promote its visibility in the open access mode, through the SciELO platform, with the online publication of high-quality academic journals. By adhering to the SciELO methodology, which is in use for more than 11 years in Latin America and Caribbe, the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) leads the project in cooperation with BIREME/PAHO/WHO, having already selected four scientific journals to be included in the SciELO South Africa collection

TropIKA.net projects itself as knowledge management benchmark in the research of infectious diseases in poverty

The on-line platform TropIKA.net is oriented to managing information and exchanging scientific knowledge about infectious diseases most prevalent among the poor populations, such as malaria, tuberculosis, dengue, Chagas disease and other conditions. The TropIKA.net contemplates one of the lines of action in the Special Program in Research and Training in Tropical Infectious Diseases of the WHO (TDR/WHO) and, in collaboration with the BIREME/PAHO/WHO, is projected to be a reference portal (one stop shop) for scientific research in infectious diseases

ePORTUGUÊSe: five Portuguese-speaking countries receive VHL training

WHO has made significant advances towards the development of human resources on health in the Portuguese-speaking countries via the ePORTUGUÊSe network. Between March and April 2009, and in a joint cooperation with BIREME/PAHO/WHO, training on the VHL model was attended by people from Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, East Timor and Brazil. The event focused on the organization and availability of scientific and technical information sources on health by the VHL as a strategy to respond to the demands for information on health sciences

The Network of Collaboration Between Europe and Latin American-Caribbean Countries (NECOBELAC) aims to disseminate knowledge, methods and techniques about scientific communication and writing and open access to information in the public health domain. VHL week in Paraguay to celebrate 10 years of VHL

In order to commemorate 10 years of VHL, the Paraguay´s Ministry of Health and Social Welfare promoted training sessions and conferences in Asuncion, during the VHL Week in Paraguay, last March. The event supported by the BIREME/PAHO/WHO contributed to the development and strengthening of the network and also to train the health professionals and information technicians in the use of information available in the VHL, in addition to hosting the meeting of the Advisory Committee for VHL and the network of VHL Cooperating Libraries
